Old 98 is now closed between Flemming House Road and Thompson Mill Road as part of the 98 Bypass project. Drivers can still use Thompson Mill Road to access Falls of Neuse from Durham Road.

98 Bypass Construction to Force Closure of Area Roads

The construction of the last section of the NC 98 Bypass road is entering its final phase this fall, and that means some significant changes to traffic patterns on the western end of town.

Within a couple of weeks, the road known as “Old 98” between Durham and Thompson Mill roads will close permanently. This will affect people who normally connect from Durham Road (the current Highway 98) to Falls of Neuse Road behind the Crenshaw Hall Plantation and Crenshaw Manor subdivisions. All traffic on this section will be detoured down Thompson Mill Road to NC 98 temporarily.

Eventually, Durham Road will be realigned along a similar route as Old 98, but the traffic signal at that intersection will be removed.

Additional changes include the realignment of Falls of Neuse Road to the east to allow for a four-way intersection with new leg of Durham Road where it will intersect with the new 98 Bypass.
