This video is the first installment of a series on the history of Wake Forest, which formed around the college campus from which it took its name. The college, of course, moved to Winston-Salem in 1956.

Picture of Powers-Barbee BuildingThe three-story portion of this brick building was built by Dr. John B. Powers around 1890. In the early 1900s this building faced Wait Avenue which continued directly through what is now a small parking lot and over the railroad tracks.

When a train derailed next to the building, it marked the sixth grade crossing fatality. The road was closed and the underpass was built in 1935. Soon after, in the 1940s, the section of the building that houses Alphabet Soup and Backfins was added.
