‘Dance Band from Deacontown’ is A New Book About our Wake Forest in the 1950s

There’s a lot of history that goes along with the campus that used to be home to Wake Forest college. Much of it has to do with the Southern Baptist Convention, of course. But once in a while an odd tale or two finds its way out of someone’s memory and into public consumption.

That can be said for N.W. “Red” Pope, who attended the college in the 1950s, before it pulled up stakes for Winston-Salem. Pope and some friends formed a dance band called The Southerners, and they played all sorts of events around town during the Korean War era.

Pope has now put together a fictionalized account of that band and its adventures called The Dance Band from Deacontown. It’s a self-published book under his own imprint, Five Points Publishing, named for the well-known intersection in the Hayes Barton section of Raleigh where he grew up.
