Spend New Year’s Eve Downtown!

The “First Light Wake Forest” will take place downtown on South White Street. The party starts on Thursday, December 31, at 7:00 PM, and goes until 12:30 AM New Year’s morning

For the early-birds, there will be a Children’s countdown at 9:00 PM. The party will include face painting, inflatables, and Sleeping Booty, a ten-piece band from Raleigh (sort of). Sleeping Booty will perform at 8:00, 10:00 and 11:30 pm.

Fireworks at midnight.

Picture of Powers-Barbee BuildingThe three-story portion of this brick building was built by Dr. John B. Powers around 1890. In the early 1900s this building faced Wait Avenue which continued directly through what is now a small parking lot and over the railroad tracks.

When a train derailed next to the building, it marked the sixth grade crossing fatality. The road was closed and the underpass was built in 1935. Soon after, in the 1940s, the section of the building that houses Alphabet Soup and Backfins was added.
