I didn’t until about 8 years ago, when I stumbled upon one that bisects most of the Wakefield Plantation Community between Falls of the Neuse and (roughly) NewFallsof theNeuse. Greenways are what Planning Commissions around here call bike/walking/jogging paths or trails and recently the area has exploded with new ones and improvements upon the existing ones. This is great news for area residents!

Have you been on any of the new Greenways yet in the area? My family and I have tried out a few of them, and are hooked. We pack up as many bikes as we can until we run out of room in the truck (one of these days this family of 6 will invest in a bike trailer…), then we throw in a couple of scooters and a jog stroller to make sure everyone is covered and head out.

For kicks and giggles we throw in the four kids and puppy as well. Sometimes my husband is brave enough to join in on the fun, too.

Weekends tend to be busy on the Greenways, naturally. It’s wise to instruct the kids to be mindful of the “rules of the road” and stay on the right side of the path. It’s good manners, particularly with all of the runners and two wheeled traffic, but it’s also a safety issue as you don’t want your little ones being plowed over by a cyclist. Cyclists, be mindful as well, that children can get distracted and forget the rules no matter how many times we parents remind them, so be forgiving with the families that are sharing the path.

If you are looking for wildlife, we have encountered heron, deer (females and tiny fawns as well as a nice sized buck), and enormous flocks of migrating birds perched in trees that made me shiver momentarily as I thought of the old Alfred Hitchcock movie, “The Birds.” We have stumbled upon tumbling little creeks with natural “waterfalls” (with about a 4 foot drop), found swimming holes along the Neuse River, caught tadpoles, and crayfish, all to our delight.

Once we were stopped by a family who swore that we had their dog. Apparently there are two 8 month old tricolor English Setter pups in the Greater Wake Forest area that have black and brown patches over one eye. Thankfully, the patches are on opposite eyes, and we were no longer under suspicion of dog snatching!

My 5 year old daughter laughed as they walked away, remarking at the fact that even our puppy, Briar, has a “doppelganger.” Thank you, Phinneus and Ferb for expanding her volcabulary…

You just never know what you’ll run across when you are on the Greenways. Check them out!

State University in Raleigh from June 24-27, 2012, and young men can apply to attend the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from June 16-20. Wake Electric will award scholarships to one boy and one girl and is accepting applications now through March 30, 2012.

Applicants sponsored by Wake Electric must live in Wake, Durham, Johnston, Vance, Granville, Nash or Franklin counties but do not have to live in households served by Wake Electric in order to win.

“Wake Electric is thrilled to continue our tradition of awarding these scholarships to outstanding students,” said Fred Keller, manager of member and energy services at Wake Electric. “This program provides kids with an unforgettable opportunity to work with collegiate coaches, experience life on a college campus and develop fundamental skills that will help them excel both on and off the court.”

Students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grade are eligible to apply. More information and applications, which are judged on academics, extracurricular activities and an essay, can be found at www.wemc.com/basketball.aspx or by contacting Wake Electric at communications@wemc.com or (919) 863-6312.

More than 50 students across the state will attend basketball camps this summer through the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp program, a reflection of the electric cooperatives’ commitment to community.

Before last weekend, Jimmy Broadway said he couldn’t remember the last time he played the lottery. But when he saw that the Powerball jackpot had topped $300 million, the Wake Forest man decided to try his luck again. While his Powerball tickets didn’t hit the jackpot, the $1 Mega Millions ticket he bought turned out to be worth $250,000.

Saturday morning, Broadway retrieved a few of his old Powerball and Mega Millions tickets from the sun visor in his car and, using the same numbers, bought new tickets at the Murphy Oil next to Walmart on South Main Street in Wake Forest. He played the Powerball numbers he had originally Quick Picked, and bought a Mega Millions ticket using the numbers he had chosen before himself.

Broadway didn’t have luck in Saturday’s Powerball drawing. His Mega Millions ticket was for Tuesday’s drawing, but it sat on his kitchen counter until Friday morning when he looked up the winning numbers on his laptop. His ticket matched all five white balls, winning $250,000. With the win, Broadway said that he will pay off his wife’s car and become “debt-free.”

A North Carolina native, Broadway retired from the Air Force 22 years ago and worked in human resources until retiring in 2005. Upon receiving his after-tax winnings of $170,005, Broadway said it felt “great.”

Through June 30 of last year, Wake County players won more than $277.6 million in lottery prizes and local retailers earned more than $37.3 million in commissions on ticket sales.

During the same time frame, Wake County education programs received more than $145.8 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, need-based college scholarships and prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.2 billion for these initiatives statewide.

Have you ever driven by a local business you loved and saw the lights out, doors locked and a “for rent” sign in the window? Did you feel a sense of loss and a need for explanation? We’ve all seen this a little more than less lately in Wake Forest, but the bottom line is we can all do our part to support local businesses and craftspeople by buying local produce, locally made arts and gifts, and by visiting a locally owned store the next time your are in need of something.

The opportunity to support these local shop owners and craftspeople is abundant! Wake Forest is a beautiful example of so many locally owned businesses, locally made arts and crafts, locally grown produce, and locally produced unique food labels. The benefits to the community are immense, studies have shown that more financial support and investment is filtered back into the community by small business owners, more jobs are created and more local buying business partnerships are formed by creating a thriving “ecosystem” of sorts.

Carolina Clover Jewelry and Gifts as well as other marketplace and gallery vendors in The Cotton Company are making their “locally owned” impact known with signs displayed around the store informing patrons of what kind of local products and services we as vendors, artists and craftspeople are bringing to the community. Not only are many of our products unique, many of them are locally crafted with materials purchased from other local businesses. We hope it will make an impact on your decision to shop in our stores, buy that unique gift or specialty item which will eventually benefit us all.

Those who know me best know that I’m terrible at math, but for the sake of this post I do know if we THINK LOCALLY + BUY LOCALLY = PROSPERITY for Wake Forest small businesses, artists, farmers, craftspeople. We sure do hope to see you in the store this weekend!

Have you ever been to Bunn, NC? From Wake Forest, it’s about a 20-minute drive. There is usually a steady stream of cars, families, preschools, and groups, heading that way on 98 toward Vollmer Farm in April and May, when they open their “pick your own” strawberry fields, but there is so much more to Vollmer than strawberries!

Six years ago, Vollmer Farm began offering a “Community Supported Agriculture” (C
SA) program. We found out about it because my oldest daughter was attending St. Catherine of Siena School in Wake Forest, and Vollmer was donating a portion of the proceeds from the CSA to the school. The program works like this: mid-winter, you send in a Member/Grower agreement to register with the program, along with a payment (depending on they size/type of “share” you want), and for 20 weeks (mid-April to mid-August) every week you will receive a box of whatever fruits or vegetables they are harvesting at that time. All of their fruits and veggies are organically grown and when you break it down, each box ends up costing roughly $20-28, depending on which size share you choose.

Not a bad deal for fresh, organic, and locally grown produce.

We waited with anticipation to see what goodies would be in each box and were never disappointed! From berries to squash, greens, and potatoes, to a “salsa bundle” that consisted of jalapenos, tomatoes, onion, and garlic, my kids always looked forward to Wednesday when we would pick up our box. As you might expect, most days, the berries were gone before we even made it home. Occasionally, we encountered veggies that I was not familiar with or knew how to cook, so it was a learning experience for me as well as the kids. One time we received cauliflower, that when cooked, turned purple. My kids, who are not fans of this particular vegetable (they get it honest, as neither am I…) were delighted to see the finished purple “broccoli” and ate it. Seriously, I can’t make this stuff up. Purple Cauliflower…that kids actually enjoyed!

We were invited, as part of the CSA, one year to have a tour of the farm with “Farmer John.” I took my (then) 3 kids out to meet Farmer John and learn more about the farm. He is a dear man, born on the farm and has lived there most of his life. He loves his land, and when faced with the prospect of how to keep the farm in the family, operational, and relevant in today’s world (it’s already been in the family for 5 generations), he began to look into options, including organic farming and subsequently, CSAs. As we toured the farm, he shared with us some of his memories of growing up there as well as his concerns for the future of the farm. The also have a small marketplace and ice cream shop, and on weekends open their recreational area, which they call “The Back Forty.”

If you haven’t been, it’s worth the short trip. If you go in the spring, take some buckets (sand buckets will do nicely) and take your kids too. There is nothing like eating freshly picked strawberries in the field. I would also recommend putting all of your kids in dark clothing, as their faces and clothes will be stained red before you are through. We always arrive, rather sheepishly, at the counter to pay for our berries with strawberry stained faces and hands…indisputable evidence of our sampling the products along the way.

If you are interested in joining the CSA or learning more about Vollmer Farm, please check out their website. I promise that you will not be disappointed in your boxes! http://www.vollmerfarm.com/csaopen.html

Louis Zamperini was a bit of a troublemaker as a kid, but when he discovered running as a teen, he shaped up and took control of his life. With the help of his devoted brother, Zamperini began setting records and even made it to the Olympics in 1936. Then he went to war.

In Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of Zamperini’s life, with particular focus on his time in the war. As a bombardier during World War II, Zamperini fought the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean until his plane went down during a search for a lost aircraft. What follows is an odyssey that takes Zamperini from one horror to another. And in every case, he proves to be a survivor.

This is an amazing story of a truly amazing man. First he survives a plane crash. Then he survives being on a life raft for 47 days, only to fall into the hands of the Japanese who put him in POW camps that I wish were a figment of the author’s imagination. The details of the way the Japanese treated POWs during World War II are atrocious. As a matter of fact, this was the biggest discussion during my book club meeting. Everyone in the group was shocked at the actions of the Japanese during this war. There are so many books and stories about the Nazis but I’ve never encountered the story of the torture that the Japanese inflicted upon so many POWs.

Despite the harsh topic, this book is definitely filled with hope. For a man to survive what Zamperini did, and to persevere in the future, is truly amazing. In addition, Hillenbrand’s tone throughout the book is more factual than emotional, and while this would sometimes be considered a negative, I think it works very well in this case to leave a bit of space between the reader and the horrors being described.

I highly recommend this book for book clubs as there are many interesting topics for discussion. I also recommend it for anyone who enjoys biographies and war stories, of course.

What happens when you are a lower level agent bored from a 12 month assignment, guarding a safehouse and you get the guest of a lifetime? Seems like an interesting task, until someone breeches your safehouse to get him and kill anyone in their way.

In Safe House we have Ryan Reynolds as Matt Weston a greenish C.I.A. agent who is the innkeeper and Denzel Washington as the Rouge agent Tobin Frost who’s been working all sides for the past 9 years. Robert Patrick is also in it in a role much closer to his The Unit days than his T2 days. Man i loved that show. Anyway the movie takes place in Cape Town and from the moment Denzel is in the safehouse Ryan sees all kinds of things that make him think something is very, very wrong here.

The action is pretty good, lots of gun battles and a chase scene but what evolves during the movie is the relationship between two people who are on the outside of the law but stuck together in the worse situation. Frost is seasoned, he knows what to do, he knows what the agency is up to… he wrote some of the protocols. He works Weston over because he can but he also makes him think because they are on the run together after the breach and he knows things aren’t always what them seem.

There are some flaws, i would have loved for Denzel’s character to have been fleshed out just a little bit more. We know he’s in it for the money but you get a glimmer that its something more. This movie clocks in at a hair under 2 hours, with the storyline that was clearly thought about as opposed to non-stop action it seems like something was cut that shouldn’t have been. I guess we have to hope for quality deleted scenes on the DVD release.

I give this movie a Matinee. It’s a good date movie, the women will get two swoon worthy actors and the men get the action and gun battle. I thought it was well done but it could have used a little bit more. And can I say I’m liking the trend of endings that aren’t neat little packages that make you think. The Debt and Haywire both had those just cut endings were you were pretty sure what happened even if they don’t show it. This is a good date movie. The action is enough to keep the men excited, The women of course love Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington already.
Safe House is rated R.

My reading encompasses a wide range of genres, from literary fiction and thrillers, to memoirs and biographies, to books about business and art. I even read children’s books that appeal to my young kids. Today, I’d like to share a few snippets from recent reviews I’ve written.

Nonfiction: The Art of Life by Sabin Howard and Traci L. Slatton

This is a beautiful book about figurative sculpture written by author Traci L. Slatton and featuring her husband, Sabin Howard’s artwork. She begins with a personal story of how she and her husband each became enamored with this form of art. Then she reviews the history of figurative sculpture with many diverse examples from the Balikligol Man from Turkey, which is more than 13,000 years old, to Rodin’s Striding Man. The remainder of the book focuses on Sabin Howard. She offers a sort of biography of his education and growth as an artist, and chronicles his major works of art, including a complete look at the process of creating these clay-to-bronze figures. I found this to be quite fascinating. The book is filled with beautiful photographs of artwork, but the most interesting pictures in my opinion were the ones that showed this extensive process. Also quite interesting were the many sketches that were included in the last section of the book, showing how Howard goes from a drawing on paper to a complete figurative sculpture. In reading The Art of Life, I learned a lot about figurative sculpture and enjoyed applying that knowledge during a recent visit to the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Fiction: No Story to Tell by KJ Steele

In No Story to Tell, KJ Steele has captured the small-town atmosphere and brought the characters to life. From the victimized Victoria, to her drunk and obnoxious husband Bobby and his drunk and obnoxious friends, to all the side characters who you’d expect to encounter in a small town like this ~ all are so realistic in both their actions and their voices. She has written a compelling story of an abused woman who thinks she is trapped in a loveless, miserable existence. But then she finds a spark of hope to hold onto, at least for a brief time. I will say that toward the end, Steele took Victoria in a direction I was not expecting. But overall, this is a well-written, engaging, mysterious novel that I enjoyed on many levels. It is not a lighthearted read, but I think it would appeal to those who enjoy contemporary fiction that tackles more serious issues and features interesting, realistic characters.

Children’s Fiction: The Secret of the Sacred Scarab by Fiona Ingram

Fiona Ingram’s The Secret of the Sacred Scarab is a fun adventure that I’m sure will appeal to the middle-grade crowd. It’s about cousins Adam and Justin who join their Aunt Isabel and Gran on a tour of Egypt. Traveling from their home in South Africa, they can’t help but wonder what sorts of adventures they may find on their trip. But soon they find themselves in a much bigger adventure than they had expected. It all starts with a dirty old stone scarab that a peddler slips into Adam’s pocket. This sets off a chain of events that leads the boys down the Nile and across the desert in an effort to save the world. Ingram brings together an exciting adventure with lots of facts and myths from Egyptian history. It’s a nice blend that doesn’t get into too much detail to be over most kids’ heads. She also develops Adam and Justin into great characters that kids can really relate to and look up to. They get into a bit of trouble and try to keep what they’re doing secret from their aunt and grandmother, but overall they’re pretty good kids. I’d definitely recommend this for middle-grade readers who are looking for some adventure, especially if they have an interest in ancient Egypt or enjoy Indiana Jones movies!

I mean, not only did they recreate much of the campus in Winston-Salem, they even used the same street names (Wingate) and they even have their own version of Shorty’s.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t remember the good times, right? Well, folks at the university at least like to look back through the family album and Wake Forest Magazine has created this neat infographic on the important events in Wake Forest history.

Do not fear the chicken in the yellow fedora!

If you have driven in or out of Wake Forest on S. Main Street, I am sure you have noticed the Tropical Picken Chicken signage and/or restaurant. It’s tucked in right next door to Wake Forest morning staple, Daylight Donuts. I love trying new places, but while I was intrigued by the sign, I had no idea what they were serving and it took me a while to pop in.

Thankfully, I did, because it has become my go-to place for take-out that feeds my family of 6 for about $20 (with leftovers). And they run great specials and coupons all the time, including a whole chicken and two sides for $9.99).

I love trying new local places. First of all, I feel strongly about supporting local businesses, specifically, the small business or the Mom & Pop variety. Second, the variety of food that we are getting in and around Wake Forest makes it fun. Naturally, we’ve got some great Carolina BBQ and Southern home-style cooking but we now have Italian, Japanese/Sushi, Chesapeake area Blue Crabs, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Cuban/Latin.

Tropical Picken Chicken, as I came to learn is of this latter variety (Cuban/Latin). Without this sounding like a restaurant review, the food is great. Everything, the meat, the herbs and spices, is fresh and never frozen. But the reason why I am writing about this place in particular is that I can call, place my order, pick it up in about 15 minutes, and have a pretty healthy dinner that my husband and four kids absolutely love.

My 5-year-old said last night, “Mom, this chicken is so good that it doesn’t even need ketchup!!” Is that a ringing endorsement, or what?

We usually order one of the “family meals.” Our favorite is the Whole Chicken and Pulled Pork BBQ (two family sized entrees) with 2 large sides, for $19.99. This is a whole char-grilled chicken (cut up) which had been marinated in some type of deliciousness for 72 hours. In addition to the chicken, the pulled pork, also marinated in a special mojo and tropical spice concoction, is wonderful (and my kids love it). For our sides, we usually get black beans and a mac and cheese (but there are a bunch from which to choose).

There has been a recent change in management, and it is now run by Randy Hernandez, who is responsible for all of the new specials and coupons that are readily available. He is extremely nice, energetic, and eager to grow his business. He even offered free salsa and merengue lessons (and music) on Friday night at the restaurant.

It’s different from the typical take-out, yes. But after however many years of Mc Donalds, Moe’s, pizza, and Chick-fil-A, it’s great to have another option that I can feel good about feeding to my family and also feel good about supporting the local economy.
