The Cotton Company is organizing a fun contest with our downtown statue:
In an effort to encourage community involvement and to promote patronage to Historic Downtown businesses, The Cotton Company is organizing the “Downtown Fun with YUM YUM” Promotion. The promotion will ask that visitors submit pictures of themselves with “YUM YUM” – group shots of family & friends, funny and creative shots, or individual shots showing off goodies they’ve purchased downtown. Why would people be interested in submitting their picture? To win gift certificates to some of their favorite places of course!

Continue reading …On Sept. 26, the first Wake Forest IrishFest will be held at Festival Park in downtown Wake Forest. To help celebrate Wake Forest’s national and international reputation for fostering the arts, there will be two writing competitions – a short story contest and a poetry contest.
These competitions are in proud and loving memory of two young men who shared a passion for writing. They left behind a rich legacy of the written word. In their honor, the following events are now added to the inaugural Wake Forest Irish Festival: The Andrew Britton Short Story Competition & The Graham Johnson Poetry Competition.
The Rules
* No entry form is needed. Entry is by US Mail, or by e-mail if required.
* You can make as many different entries as you like, in either or both competitions. Cost is $15 per story; $10 per poem.
* There is no restriction on theme or style, and all are welcome.
* Entries should be submitted on standard 8.5×11 paper, double-spaced type, and with no name showing on script.
* Maximum 2,000 words for the short stories; maximum 50 lines for the poems.
What can you do on a random afternoon with some Bubble Yum, a guitar, and a field of abandoned antique cars? If you’re Wake Forest resident and photographer Kristel Acevedo ( @KristelAce ), you and your husband, Alex, make some really great photos and post them to your blog.
The almost-serendipitous photo shoot produced photos which have the feel of indie-rock album art, with the couple looking like a really cool guitar and vocal duet. Thanks to the neat filtering affects, a few look like they were shot 40 years ago on some old Kodachrome film. We’d post some here, but don’t want to trample on Kristel’s copyright. So, just follow the link and make your eyes happy.
