The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored two runs in the ninth inning to stave off a valiant comeback by the Carolina Mudcats in front of 1,207 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.

The Pelicans (7-6) scored the tying run on a wild pitch, and a solo home run by Odubel Herrera allowed the Rangers’ Advanced-A affiliate to escape with a 7-6 win.

The Mudcats (6-7) trailed 5-3 for much of the game before plating three in the eighth. Jesus Aguilar started the rally by earning a one out walk. Singles by Jeremie Tice and Jake Lowery loaded the bases for Carlos Moncrief.

The right fielder bounced a ball to first, but Brett Nicholas fumbled the grounder, allowing a run to score. Ronny Rodriguez singled home pinch runner Delvi Cid to tie the game at 5-5. A wild pitch plated the go-ahead run for Carolina.

Carolina reliever Jordan Cooper (0-2) was hit for two runs on three hits in the ninth for the loss. Randy Henry (2-0) tossed a scoreless inning-and-two-third for the win.

Myrtle Beach pecked starter Michael Goodnight for three early runs. A two-out base hit by Tomas Telis gave the Pelicans the lead in the first inning. A fly ball by Herrera plated a run in the second for a 2-0 advantage. In the third, Jake Skole cranked a solo shot to right field to put Myrtle Beach further ahead, 3-0.

Goodnight’s outing ended after allowing two more runs in the fourth. A double play grounder scored one, and a single by Yefry Castillo made it 5-1 Pelicans. In all, Goodnight allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out one.

Tony Wolters cut the lead to two with a one-out grounder in the third inning.
