The Carolina Mudcats scored two runs in the eighth inning to escape the Wilmington Blue Rocks (2-4) 5-3 in front of 1,044 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.

Jake Lowery punched through the winning run for the Mudcats (4-2) with a two-out single to right in the eighth. Carlos Moncrief followed with a double of the high wall in right-center for an insurance run.

Francisco Jimenez (1-0) tossed a scoreless eighth to pick up his first win of the year. Jose Flores earned his first save by pitching the ninth.

Wilmington rallied with three runs in the sixth to tie the game, spoiling a terrific start by Clayton Cook. The right-hander took a no-hit bid into the frame before the Blue Rocks seized an opportunity to strike. A single sandwiched between a pair of errors allowed Wilmington to load the bases with no outs. Angel Franco drove in two with a single, and a fly ball by Kevin David tied the score at 3-3.

The Mudcats built an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Carolina loaded the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles following a strikeout. Jeremie Tice snuck a two-run into right field to give the Mudcats the lead. Jake Lowery followed with a double to drive in his first of two RBI on the night.

The Mudcats begin a six-game road swing with a trip to Winston-Salem Friday night. Carolina will throw LH Mike Rayl (0-1, 11.25) against RH Andre Rienzo (1-0, 1.80 for the Dash.
