Inadvertently, I hit the jackpot last week. Two of my favorite pastime activities have married in Wake Forest.
1) Running and 2) socializing over a nice glass of wine or a beer with friends.
I met a friend last week at Cellar 275, a new-ish (opened in October 2011) wine and beer cafe’ at The Factory in Wake Forest, to catch up after a very busy week. I’ve walked by it many times, but never had the occasion to pop in and see what it was all about.
Gary, the owner, was most helpful when he learned that it was our first time visiting. He allowed us to sample a couple of different wines before settling on a selection and explained that he also stocks bottles for sale. In addition to wine, he has a couple of varieties of beer on tap, for those who do not favor fermented grape juice.
There were a couple of men huddled over a laptop when we first arrived with whom we struck up a friendly exchange about their project. After a brief introduction, we learned that we had just met the Treasurer of the Wake Forest Area Runners Group, and that Cellar 275 is where the group meets regularly. The President of the group, Bobby Baxter, a jovial, energetic gentleman, walked in a few minutes later and introduced himself.
Tell me more, I said, my curiosity is piqued.
Started last year, the group meets on Thursday evenings, and depending upon your preference, you can do a 3 or 5 mile run, with start times at 6pm and 615pm. After running, the groups meet back at Cellar 275 for a friendly drink with their running companions, and Gary generously offers both beer and wine specials.
My friend said that she has seen the group grow the last several Thursdays, and that she noticed that there seem to be a lot of kids in the mix in the post-run gathering…how does that work?
Not only do they come up with runs, have fun people to run with (at all paces, they stressed), finish off the run with a cold (or cool) beverage of choice, but they offer childcare to boot!?!?
You offer childcare??? You had me at running, held me with wine, and now I am yours forever with childcare.
They offer several levels of membership (including a free membership) and you can get all kinds of information about the group on their Facebook page.
